Magnolia was the ninth of ten children. At the age of three she moved to Kansas with her alcoholic parents and broken and abusive family. At fifteen, one of only five children still alive in the family, she ran away and made her way to California. Living on board ships in San Francisco harbor, juvenile halls and jails, she fought her way through the court system and was legally granted the status of an adult while still a minor.
